Spanning seniors, families, young people, and school students, GACCQ is involved in many initiatives promoting not only our German heritage but also our interactions with the many multicultural communities that comprise the colourful and diverse people of Queensland!
During the COVID pandemic, for instance, GACCQ produced a bilingual Mental Health Infosheet for our German community members to help understand and access vital government and wider community supports during that trying time.
From German calendar highlights like Karneval to Advent (Christmas) and Sylvester (New Year’s Eve), GACCQ promotes and supports a diverse range of art, literature, music, film and dance events and interests designed to appeal to the wider community.
Lively, engaging performances, and crowd-pleasing events like our participation in Oktoberfest Brisbane and Oktoberfest for Teens have been a hallmark of GACCQ’s cultural involvement in the lives of Queenslanders!
“Sprechen sie Deutsch?” … the German and English languages share many more linguistic foundations in common than you might first think! (Yes, some German compound words might seem mind-bogglingly the stuff of internet memes, but breaking them down into their constituent meanings is part of the fun!)
GACCQ was a driving force behind the formation of the German Language Round-Table group which brought together consular and business contacts, as well as senior and tertiary education representatives, together with MLTAQ members. GACCQ founded and continues to recognise the German Language Achievement Awards for top-ranked Queensland senior school students immersed in studying German language, lifestyle and culture.
The German Australian Community Centre (Qld) Inc. (GACCQ) was the 2005 brainchild of Detlef Sulzer, then the Honorary Consul of Germany to Southern Queensland, who recognised a broad community need for an ‘umbrella organisation’ to bring together and co-ordinate the efforts of many different groups and organisations.
Since then, GACCQ has evolved and adapted to changing community and social needs, straddling a surprising range of initiatives, including supporting educational achievements and cultural programs, book publishing, and instigating a multi-year program of historical commemoration events – and even playing a pivotal role in the naming of a new Qantas Boeing 737!
